JOB TITLE: On-Call Laboratory Technician

FLSA STATUS: Non Exempt

DIVISION: Laboratory

RATE: $17.00 - $24.77 per hour

Status: PRN

POSITION SUMMARY:

Precisely and accurately performs a variety of technical procedures from patients of all ages. These procedures may be performed with the use of manual, semi-automated methodologies and include accepted quality control procedures, competency testing and proficiency testing.​

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Performs established procedures within the laboratory accurately and precisely including phlebotomy; KDOT, if certified, and Drug TOX screens that are medically necessary not legal drug screen collections.

2. Verifies that quality control values are acceptable before testing samples.

​

3. Notifies Lab supervisor when quality control problems exist.

​

4. Organizes work in order that procedures are performed properly.

​

5. Follows OSHA regulations.

​

6. Demonstrates an ability to understand when situations are out of the employee’s area of expertise. Follow-up by asking assistance of the group lead, supervisor or other lab authority.

7. Follows established policies and procedures within the laboratory as outlined in the policy and procedure manuals.

​

8. Be available by phone or pager when on call; report to hospital within 30 minutes after receiving notice of stat lab tests.

​

9. When on call, keep charge nurse informed regarding how to be reached.

​

10. Demonstrate positive attitude of customer service.

​

11. Additional duties as directed and developed by laboratory supervisor

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Preferred 2 years experience in laboratory/phlebotomy, MLT (ASCP) or NCA with clinical lab experience, or A.A. in Science with clinical experience. Minimum qualification is high school diploma/GED with satisfactory training administered by CLIA recognized supervisor. Must have acceptable KBI record check. Must have valid driver's license.

SKILLS:

Problem solving skills, ability to work under time constraints without error.​

 

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED:

Chemistry analyzer, hematology analyzer, coagulation instrument, triage meter, Siemens Clinitek Status Urinalysis analyzer and other miscellaneous WAIVE testing instruments.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:

Good vision, dexterity, ambulation, cognitive thinking required. May involve standing for several hours. Work involves frequent interruptions; must be able to work in emergent situations with clarity. Regularly required to sit, talk, see and hear. Frequently required to sit, stand, use hands, reach and walk stoop and bend; must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Work independently with minimal supervision.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The employee works in an environment with biological, chemical and mechanical hazards. The employer will provide appropriate training, protective equipment and engineering controls for the protection and safety of the employee. As a condition of employment, the employee is required to abide by all risk management regulations including the proper use of protective devices and procedures.
