What is the 2020 No Surprises Act?
This act, in effect since January 2022, protects against surprise medical bills for those without insurance or paying out of pocket. By federal law, medical institutions are required to provide a good faith estimate of all impending medical procedures or appointments. The No Surprises Act is meant for both emergent and non-emergent cases, in and out of insurance networks.
What does the estimate look like?
Estimates will be sent to patients through the patient portal and/or through mail based on chosen preference. All estimates should be received within 1-3 days of scheduling an appointment. If the estimate is not received before the scheduled appointment, it will be rescheduled to a time when the estimate is available. Due to potential changes in co-pay, deductibles, and plans throughout the year, estimates given to patients utilizing an insurance provider are only valid for 30 days to ensure accuracy.
What if my bill is higher than the given estimate?
Estimates are an approximation based on readily available facts. Charges may be higher due to complications, test results, or changes in care plans. Estimates do not contain specific charges for outside service fees such as radiology or pathology. If the final bill is higher than the estimate by $400 or more, there is a 30 business day window for negotiation between patient and provider. If the patient is unable to come to an agreement with F.W. Huston Medical Center, an independent dispute resolution (IDR) may be filed to decide on final terms. This process must be initiated within four business days of the negotiation period’s end.
