JOB TITLE: Recreational Therapist

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

DIVISION: Social Services

RATE: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour

Status: Full-Time

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Occasional weekend and evening hours as needed.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Rehabilitation Services Manager, the Recreational Therapist is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating therapeutic recreation and leisure programs tailored to the physical, emotional, and social needs of residents/clients in a long-term care and assisted living setting. The Recreational Therapist works collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to enhance quality of life and support individualized care plans.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assess residents’ recreational needs, interests, and functional abilities and develop individualized treatment plans.

  2. Design, lead, and evaluate therapeutic recreation activities that promote physical, cognitive, emotional, and social well-being.

  3. Document resident progress, participation, and outcomes in accordance with facility policies and professional standards.

  4. Collaborate with nursing, therapy, and social services staff to integrate recreation goals into overall care planning.

  5. Prepare and distribute activity schedules and calendars, ensuring high visibility and accessibility for residents and families.

  6. Recruit, orient, and supervise volunteers and activity assistants as needed.

  7. Maintain therapeutic supplies, adaptive equipment, and recreational resources in a safe, organized manner.

  8. Facilitate community outings and special events when appropriate and with necessary approvals.

  9. Encourage resident participation and provide support for residents with varying levels of ability.

  10. Participate in care conferences, quality assurance meetings, and ongoing staff development activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, or related field required.

  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) preferred.

  • Experience in geriatric care, long-term care, rehabilitation, or related clinical setting preferred.

  • Must have acceptable background/criminal record check.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to transport residents for outings when required.

 

SKILLS:

  • Strong interpersonal communication, organization, and creative programming skills.

  • Ability to adapt activities to accommodate varying functional levels and cognitive abilities.

  • Professional attitude with a focus on resident-centered care and customer service.

 

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED:

Standard office equipment (computer, telephone), adaptive recreation devices, therapeutic activity materials, and facility transportation as needed.

SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS:

May oversee volunteers and activity assistants supporting recreational programming.

 

TYPICAL PHYSICAL/ MENTAL DEMANDS:

Regularly required to stand, walk, lift up to 30 lbs, engage in hands-on programming, and interact with residents and staff. Must be able to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic work environment.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is typically performed in recreational spaces, residents’ rooms, and communal areas. May include exposure to biological and physical health care elements; appropriate training and safety equipment are provided.
